A number of nations are considering banning DeepSeek, including the US, after the Chinese AI chatbot unexpectedly rose to the top of the global app download charts last week.

A bill proposed by Republican Senator Josh Hawley would ban US citizens from using the app or interacting with other Chinese-made AI systems, or face jail time and a fine of up to $1 million per violation.

Though other nations have already imposed partial bans or indicated that regulators are looking into DeepSeek, the US would only be the second to enact a complete ban of the app if it were to become law.

Concerns about data security have also led to numerous businesses banning the popular app; according to the company’s privacy statement, all user data is kept on Chinese servers.

Similar worries have been raised about apps like TikTok, which is already prohibited in many parts of the world.
