Top Country for Social Media Usage: Who’s Online the Longest?

In 2024, people will use social media for 500 million years in total. As of January 2024, this list shows which nations have the highest average amount of time spent on social media by users between the ages of 16 and 64. We Are Social compiled the data.

Kenya Leads in Time Spent Online

Globally, there are currently over 5 billion active social media users.

The “average” internet user spends over one-third of their online time—nearly two and a half hours every day—on social media.

Women use social media for 16 minutes more than men do on average each day.

YouTube has the largest overall share of social media time, while TikTok has the highest average time spent per user.

Kenya leads the world in the amount of time spent on social media, with an average of 3 hours and 43 minutes per day.

Ghana, Nigeria, and South Africa all report high levels of social media engagement.

Brazil comes in second place in South America, averaging 3 hours and 34 minutes a day on social media.

Social media usage is lowest in Japan, where users spend an average of just one hour and fifty-three minutes every day.
