The World’s 10 Largest Exporters

Global trade flows are changing as protectionism continues to rise globally. Despite a flurry of tariffs, China’s exports of goods remain resilient.

As the average price of China’s manufactured exports dropped by 10% in 2023, the country’s export volumes approached all-time highs.

Last year, the largest exporter in the world shipped $500 billion worth of goods to the United States, but under the Trump administration, this could all change significantly.

Based on information from the World Trade Organization, this graphic displays the biggest exporters worldwide.

According to the table presented, China exported an astonishing $3.4 trillion worth of goods, leaving America almost $1.4 trillion behind in export figures. This marks a significant shift in global trade dominance, as the last time America held this title was in 1979.

Since then, the United States has witnessed a growing trade deficit. However, a notable change has occurred in the energy sector, where America’s primary export, has transitioned from a deficit to a surplus over the past decade.

The United States’ trade balance was strengthened in 2023 when it achieved a net energy surplus of $65 billion. The country has been protected from oil price shocks, such as those brought on by the Russia-Ukraine war, which had a devastating effect on the economies of Europe, by a notable increase in domestic energy production.

Despite the economy contracting, goods exports from Germany, the third-largest overall, increased by a meager 1%. Rising oil prices had a particularly negative impact on the industrial-heavy economy since they caused several businesses to halt production. The nation’s top export destination, America, received $160 billion in goods exports in 2023.

On the other hand, if Trump’s proposed tariffs are implemented, exports to the US may drop by 20%. The industries most affected would be the pharmaceutical and automotive sectors, which would both see declines of 32% and 35%, respectively.
