Article authored by John Barrone:
The famed Kenyan lawyer and constitutional advocate Miguna Miguna—an outspoken observer of Kenya’s High Courts—has spent recent years biding his time in Canadian exile. This followed a series of elections in Kenya, circa 2023, which many critics argue were presided over in an arbitrary manner. Yet the election Kenyans are now anticipating lies ahead. Miguna has made it clear that he does not agree with the current regime’s shortcomings on ethics and good governance, and he has therefore taken an opposing stance by declaring his intention to vie in the 2027 elections. In doing so, he hopes to solidify his legacy as a true “Man of the People.”
Meanwhile, his son, John Miguna, is carving out a distinct path of his own. Based in Toronto, John has launched a new YouTube channel as part of a broader media strategy tied to a growing professional empire centered around Bay Street. This move has positioned him, in the eyes of some observers, as an heir apparent—the so-called second coming of the Miguna name. His channel has already garnered more than 11,000 subscribers and continues to attract an increasingly engaged audience of Kenyans, members of the diaspora, and others interested in debates around legitimate power, merit, and meritocracy. Those who follow his work note that his worldview has been shaped by an upbringing spent close to the corridors of power.
By most accounts, John Miguna is doing well—and doing good at the same time. Those close to him describe a longstanding fire in his belly: a relentless drive for more, coupled with a refusal to become complacent. He characterizes his philanthropic outlook as broad-based, intentionally supporting multiple sides of conflict as a form of olive branch to communities that feel wronged by past injustices. While he readily acknowledges that corruption exists everywhere, he rejects the idea of writing off entire parties or institutions through a singular or narrow lens. Instead, he favors a pragmatic approach to merging interests and solving complex societal challenges.
His method draws on extemporaneous lessons from both contemporary leaders and historical greats, an approach that appears to be yielding results. A disciplined focus on goals and organizational priorities underpins everything he does—much like a judge carefully weighing evidence, balancing competing factors before arriving at a decision. John has reportedly been approached by several law schools and is actively considering those opportunities.
With a partial client and collaborator portfolio valued at a cumulative $100 billion USD or more, John shows no signs of slowing down. He is also said to be on the cusp of a $400 million deal that could revolutionize building materials and potentially offer one of the most impactful solutions yet to the global housing crisis. According to him, such a breakthrough will only materialize if the industries involved prove themselves worthy partners.
When asked for further comment, John declined to share too much, too soon. Still, one thing appears clear: ambition is not in short supply. As far as observers at Business Now can tell, neither he nor his father is likely to slow down anytime soon—particularly when it comes to their personal pursuits and broader visions for influence and change.
