Donald Trump selected critic-turned-ally JD Vance as his running mate at the Republican Party National Convention, amid cries of “fight, fight.” JD Vance was officially nominated by delegates to run for the US presidency.
It was an unexpected move. JD Vance had called Trump “America’s Hitler” and “reprehensible” not too long ago. But JD Vance made up with Trump before he announced his candidacies for the US Senate in 2022, and the two ultra-nationalist Americans are now leading the Republican Party in the US presidential contest set for November.
Trump’s declaration presents a unique foreign policy viewpoint that departs significantly from conventional Republican positions.
Here’s a look at top Four JD Vance’s foreign policies for Asia, Europe, Russia and Middle East:
1. Asia First Policy
In his “Asia First” strategy, JD Vance puts halting China’s military and economic expansionism ahead of the US’s established European allies. He agrees with Trump’s focus on reducing US global commitments when he criticizes the US’s prolonged aid to Ukraine and calls for greater military accountability from European countries.
2. Confronting China
JD Vance supports higher tariffs on Chinese imports to support American manufacturing. He is a fervent supporter of economic nationalism as a tactic against China. In keeping with Trump’s tough trade stance, he believes that protectionist measures are essential to reducing China’s economic influence and safeguarding US jobs.
3. Engagement with Russia
In order to protect American interests while negotiating challenging geopolitical environments, JD Vance’s calls for engagement with Putin on US terms demonstrate a practical approach to diplomacy. Future US foreign policy directions under a potential Trump administration will be greatly influenced by how well these policies are received by voters in the US and other international stakeholders.
4. Middle East
JD Vance has stood by the Israel policies, even as criticism over the number of civilian casualties increased. During a Senate hearing on a bill that would have given military aid to both Israel and Ukraine, Vance spearheaded a group of senators who proposed legislation that would have limited funding to Israel.
He repeated Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s declaration that Hamas must be destroyed in the wake of the terrorist organization’s devastating attack on Israel on October 7.
All these indicate that he has chosen a side and he will stick to that if came into power.
