5 industries that drastically changed with time

The world as we know it now is very different, compared to previous decades. The advent of the internet and the ongoing development of new technologies have meant that very few aspects of our lives have been unaffected by the technological revolution.

The development of technology has had some sort of impact on every industry, though some have changed more drastically than others.

Here are a few of the industries where technology has had the biggest noticeable effects.

Travel

Technology has made traveling overseas easier than ever before. The demand for human travel agents has decreased over the past few decades, and websites that assist in locating the greatest airfare offers and ideal vacation spots have only gotten better. Today, it’s easier than ever to plan a vacation; in fact, most people book their hotels, flights, and activities from the comfort of their own homes.

Commerce

Of all the industries, commerce has undergone the most significant change. The demand for brick and mortar stores has been steadily declining over time due to e-commerce behemoths like Amazon. Nowadays, practically anything can be purchased online, negating the need for in-person store visits. Additionally, the need for human cashiers has been eliminated in many stores due to the advancement and installation of self-service checkouts.

Newspapers

The media is another sector that has been severely impacted by the use of technology. The need to purchase a print newspaper has all but disappeared in the smartphone era. Because of this, traditional newspapers have had to quickly—and sometimes quite successfully—make the switch from print to digital.

Translation

The advancements in translation technology have made it possible for them to perform numerous tasks that were previously limited to human translators. The translations provided by artificial intelligence for well-known companies like Google and Facebook have significantly improved in quality. Not to mention, significant progress has been made in the direction of better dictation and AI proofreading services.

Publishers

Authors can now self-publish their books thanks to the development of the internet and other new technologies. Significant changes have resulted in the publishing industry, with numerous well-known brands finding it difficult to adapt. Furthermore, the rise in popularity of e-readers like Amazon’s Kindle has resulted in a decline in the market for print books, which has negative implications for bookstores.
